Actually I like Nigeria and Nigerians. I do not like the things that happen in Nigeria, but i still like Nigeria though!
I think one can love Nigerians AND Nigeria so much that it pains you when things are not working out right in the Country itself. So it's not like u hate Nigeria, but can't stand it.
That being said...I have the same sentiments exactly.
interesting comment...never heard anyone say such...
...but i imagine how one could feel that way...i would have to ask all sorts of questions to ascertain what the commenter really meant...do they like all nigerians in all contexts or just nigerians in the us for example?...what is it about naija that they can't stand?...the weather, the government, etc...especially since naija is made by its people as its people are made by the country...hmmmnnn...excuse me while i think about this some more....
I was in Nigeria over the last weekend, and I found myself asking why I tolerate in other countries what I instantly reject in Nigeria. I ask whether it does not mean that I still have that special feeling for Nigeria, a feeling that expects it not just to be good but to be better than many other countries? And then, after reading this post, and after accepting that I admit the same sentiments expressed in the post, I ask myself whether I really do not love Nigeria.
Nigerians make Nigeria what it is, so it may be hard to separate these two e.g. Attitude of Nigerians say a lot about Nigeria's image, as a country, a quasi-hostile and entity of most ills that can be found on earth today.
In the same vein, Nigerians don't make Nigeria what it is, because irrespective of what we do to the environment, the geo-physical element called Nigeria remains what it is: Plateau state is still pretty, looking down on the rain forest from hundreds or thousands of feet up there, it still looks alluring, my vegetable soup is always wonderfully made et cetera
I will say I love Nigeria, but I don't like most Nigerians because of their individual traits. I cannot lump everything "Nigeria" together and say I dislike Nigerians (which indirectly includes my wonderful family, relatives, friends both physical and electronic et al)...
I don't even know where I'm going with this...I just feel it's all about the context and uh, there'd be more grain of salt to that line of thought if dissected.
heheheheheh. I don't know why this was funny, but now that I have laughed to my heart's content, let me see....
An easter dinner turned sour cos of this same naija topic. The host of the dinner is going home for christmas and was trying to get others along, anyway, one Naija guy got upset by the invitation saying "what am I going to do there? there is nothing there for me"....na so argument start....
Boy 1:How can you say that? what do you mean there is nothing there?
Boy 2: Ehen, I don't have anything there, infact if i go there, my friends will even curse me self.
Boy 1: Just for a visit?
Boy 2: I am not going there. There is nothing there for me to do.
Boy 1: What is the big deal? just for holiday...
Boy 2: I am surprised you are talking like this... I already told you how I feel about that country. I am never going back to that place.
Me: Na wa oh! all this hot hot temper because of holiday. Abeg, leave him jare, if he does not want to go, let him not go. No be by force. Where is the wine?
I understand the comment but that has never and will be my sentiment. I love Nigerians and I love Nigeria. Yes one can find in Nigeria a plethora of problems and contradictions: but then one can find so much beauty, so much spirit, so much greeness-in the same place. Ahhhhhhh I love em both.
PS: Thank you so much for your advice on me blog!!
Thinking about it, It would be for me the other way round. I love Nigeria, a bit too much, but I am not so sure about Nigerians. But like Yosh said, its hard to seperate these two so maybe I love them both.
Nigeria is great Nigerians are wonderful creative, hardworking and funny people but there are some bad persons in Nigeria that have managed to taint our name. You only have to deal with people to know the story they have about their own country men and women. Its not just Nigerians hating each other its a world wide disease.
I love Nigerians and I love Nigeria. Nigeria for all its problems, caused by Nigerians is still a blessed country.
how can u separate the two?
it's like white on rice!lol
Makes complete sense to me.
It means loving the people but hating the country and what is currently taking place in the country.
I love Nigeria but many times I am dissapointed with it. Ignore typos...
hahahhaaa, thats a good one! it makes sense to like nigerian..who have a warm and sunny disposition, but hate the country..the no light, traffic and what not!! but the person who made the quote forgets..nigerians make up nigeria...so to hate one is to hate the other!
Aaah Tinitin, my sentiments exactly. How can any naija say they love nigerians but hate nigeria? It is a contradiction. One cannot love one and hate the other just like one cannot hate lagos and call themselves a lagosian.
Love your blog.
Thats probably the most ignorant statement someone can make.
Like Awo said, Nigeria is a 'geographical expression', Nigerians make it tick.
How can you hate Nigeria? Its nonsensical. E no make sense.
Love It. Just Love It.
i would qualify it by saying i cannot stand the nigerian leadership
makes no sense jare.dont think u can separate the 2 as one is a by product of the other
