"I like Nigerians but I just can't stand Nigeria."

Jennifer A. said...: I think one can love Nigerians AND Nigeria so much that it pains you when things are not working out right in the Country itself. So it's not like u hate Nigeria, but can't stand it.

...but i imagine how one could feel that way...i would have to ask all sorts of questions to ascertain what the commenter really meant...do they like all nigerians in all contexts or just nigerians in the us for example?...what is it about naija that they can't stand?...the weather, the government, etc...especially since naija is made by its people as its people are made by the country...hmmmnnn...excuse me while i think about this some more....; March 25, 2008 at 2:03 AM

In the same vein, Nigerians don't make Nigeria what it is, because irrespective of what we do to the environment, the geo-physical element called Nigeria remains what it is: Plateau state is still pretty, looking down on the rain forest from hundreds or thousands of feet up there, it still looks alluring, my vegetable soup is always wonderfully made et cetera

I will say I love Nigeria, but I don't like most Nigerians because of their individual traits. I cannot lump everything "Nigeria" together and say I dislike Nigerians (which indirectly includes my wonderful family, relatives, friends both physical and electronic et al)...

I don't even know where I'm going with this...I just feel it's all about the context and uh, there'd be more grain of salt to that line of thought if dissected.; March 25, 2008 at 6:32 AM

An easter dinner turned sour cos of this same naija topic. The host of the dinner is going home for christmas and was trying to get others along, anyway, one Naija guy got upset by the invitation saying "what am I going to do there? there is nothing there for me"....na so argument start....

Boy 1:How can you say that? what do you mean there is nothing there?

Boy 2: Ehen, I don't have anything there, infact if i go there, my friends will even curse me self.

Boy 1: Just for a visit?

Boy 2: I am not going there. There is nothing there for me to do.

Boy 1: What is the big deal? just for holiday...

Boy 2: I am surprised you are talking like this... I already told you how I feel about that country. I am never going back to that place.

Yes one can find in Nigeria a plethora of problems and contradictions: but then one can find so much beauty, so much spirit, so much greeness-in the same place. Ahhhhhhh I love em both.

Unknown said...: Aaah Tinitin, my sentiments exactly. How can any naija say they love nigerians but hate nigeria? It is a contradiction. One cannot love one and hate the other just like one cannot hate lagos and call themselves a lagosian.
