MUSIC: NIGERIA VS. THE AFRICAN CONTINENT XII - DOUYE

Friday, February 27, 2009

This is Nigerian Curiosity's 300th post.

Douye is a Nigerian jazz artist based in Los Angeles. The first song of hers I heard was 'Still Hurting', a blues inspired tune that I listen to ad nauseam. The song is melancholy, yet soft and sweet in the way I like my jazz to be. I also like 'On For You'. The beat is up tempo yet, smooth. It is exciting to continue to discover Nigerian artists and especially those who have chosen to brave the challenging world of jazz. Nigeria has had some jazz heavyweights in the past such as the late Fela Sowande, who wrote 'Nigerian Folk Symphony'. And with Nigerian born artists like Douye and others following in the footsteps of the world's jazz greats, the genre has a chance in catching the ears of younger Nigerians.

Enjoy Douye's 'On For You'

Her album, 'Journey' is available for sale and is worthy of your support. Please visit her website or Myspace page for more information about this very talented artist.

Sorry this a little off topic. But I think another current Nigerian Curiosity is the way the Judiciary seems to be falling on the people's sides these days especially with gubernatorial issues. Lately the Judges and the SANs have become the Kingmakers. Is this new development really a good thing or is this a case of the elite forcing their choices on the people afterall no one really knows who won these elections.

@ Mogaji: Thank you so much fro raising this important point. Maybe we can talk about it on Friday...

Nigerian music has indeed come of age and has become a pacesetter in the African continent as far as music is concerned. We’re sooooo ready to compete on a global stage. I’m surprised I didn’t see M.I and Freestyle on that list. There are so many great and ingenious Nigerian talents out there and these all goes to show that there’s a beautiful future for Nigerian music. It hurts though that we cannot duplicate this in the home video industry or Nollywood as they call it.
